In 2026, the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Regional Section of the Portuguese Architects’ Association launched the first edition of the Ruy d’Athouguia Award.

The prize, which pays tribute to the architect Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia, is intended to reword works of recognised architectural quality in this geographic area, to promote best practice in the exercise of architecture in the construction, conservation and rehabilitation of buildings, and to highlight the work of architects in the region.

A competition poster was produced to reflect the principles and structural aspects of this refurbishment.

Falanstério competed
in the Rehabilitation category
with the Palmira Building project.

[Competition]

The Palmira building project it is a building that was constructed in the early 20th century, right in the heart of Lisbon.  The challenge for the Falanstério was to go beyond merely preserving the past or asserting the present.

Instead, it sought to build a tangible continuity – one where the passage of time does not erase memory but inscribes it, layer by layer, into the very  substance of architecture.

This composition of traditional Portuguese tile-work creates a unique rhythm – almost a visual cadence – that sets the building apart from its contemporaries. Elevating it not just as a structure, but as a living expression of character and memory.

The event took place on May 30, 2026, in Óbidos, as part of Regional Architect Day, featuring a conference and the opening of an exhibition of the selected entries.

The 2026 Regional Architect Day program also included guided tours of the Bom Sucesso Resort complex, the Career Achievement Award ceremony.
