The renovation of the garage into a Wotel Lisbon – Garagem da Vizinha, transforms a dark and underused industrial space into a vibrant, multifunctional environment open to the city. Through an intense colour palette and a rigorous spatial organisation, the project converts a former car repair facility into a place for gathering, dining, working and culture, designed to welcome guests, visitors and a diverse programme of activities.
More than simply renovating a former garage, the intervention seeks to return the space to the city, transforming it into a lively, open environment available for different forms of use. Between colour, movement and encounter, architecture gives new life to a former service space, turning it into a versatile facility integrated into the urban dynamics of the hotel and its community.
Organised across two levels, the project establishes different degrees of use and appropriation. In direct contact with the street, the ground floor acts as an interface between the hotel and the city, incorporating reception, a self-service laundry, lockers, a support pantry for breakfast service and several areas for staying and gathering. The circulation creates a sequence of environments that moves from more informal spaces towards increasingly private areas, culminating in a more intimate leisure and games area.

Conceived as a space for gathering, working and cultural expression, it adapts to different uses – from informal meetings and study sessions to workshops, presentations and small performances.
A varied furniture arrangement, together with a stepped seating system, allows the space to be easily reconfigured, transforming into a stage, auditorium or social area. Here, architecture is no longer simply a backdrop, but becomes part of the action.
[Flexibility as a Programme]
The entire floor is supported by technical areas and accessible sanitary facilities, ensuring comfort, functionality and inclusion. The lower level, predominantly technical in character, also contains a large space available for private hire and events. Its open configuration reinforces the hybrid nature of the project, allowing different programmes to coexist within the same space.
